Ein Porträt, gemalt oder fotografiert, das Betrachter nicht so leicht vergessen, zeigt viel mehr als ein Gesicht oder ein Profil. Im besten Fall setzt dieser Augenblick die Fantasie in Gang; eine Szene, die mehr sagt als tausend Worte und eine eigene Geschichte tragen kann; einen Moment, in dem sich selbst ein an Kameras gewöhnter Prominenter öffnet und so zeigt, wie ihn zuvor kaum jemand gesehen hat. Als Fotograf auf Abstand achten, sich quasi unsichtbar machen, nicht beachtet werden, das kann dabei manchmal hilfreich sein. Ich beziehe in Porträts möglichst mit ein, womit sich eine Person umgibt, weil auch das etwas über sie erzählt.
A memorable portrait, be it painting or photo, shows more than a face or
a profile. At best, it sparks the imagination; a scene that conveys more
than words ever can and carries its own compelling story; a second when
a prominent person inured to publicity is caught off guard letting the
mask slip to reveal a hitherto private aspect. It helps for the
photographer to melt into the background, to be inobtrusive,
inconspicuous. I try to incorporate in my portraits features and
surroundings pertaing to the subject because they are biographical
indicators.
